FAQ

Do I need to be a member of Spiritual Directors International to join the journey?
No, you do not need to be a member of Spiritual Directors International to join the journey. We ask only that the contemplative nature of this journey ignite your heart and spirit, and that you be eager to explore its spiritual and historical dimensions.

Which airport should I use?
Glasgow Airport (GLA) is the closest airport to Iona. You may want to consider extending your Iona journey to include other sacred parts of the United Kingdom or Europe.

What should I pack?
Scottish weather can be unpredictable. Waterproof clothing and suitable walking footwear are essential.

How physically active will we be?
The journey includes walks on roads, tracks, and some uneven surfaces. If you find longer walks difficult, enjoy as much of a walk as feels comfortable to you. You should be in good health. International and domestic travel can be taxing, and SDI has done its best to design the schedule with your well-being in mind.

What if something happens before the journey begins and I am unable to participate? Can I get my money back?
The $500 deposit is an administrative fee that secures your space in this intimate journey and is nonrefundable. There are no exceptions to the refund policy.

We strongly recommend that you obtain travel insurance to cover financial losses from any personal emergencies or other events that require your cancellation. You are responsible for reading your policy and understanding what it covers.

Will participants engage in combined worship?
No. SDI is an inclusive spiritual learning community. A list of local houses of worship will be available to you; however, offsite worship is the individual’s responsibility. During the journey, we will share sacred time together designed to deepen our own faith and learn about other traditions.

I do not know much about other spiritual traditions, and I want to learn. Will my curiosity be enough?
You do not need an advanced understanding of other faiths and traditions to enter into journey. The most important qualities for the participant journey are a respectful presence, an open mind, and a generous heart. The rest will be learned on the journey.
